Green Bay, Wis. – The Green Bay Bullfrogs (1-3, 19-19) and the Waterloo Bucks (2-2, 21-18) were locked up in a pitchers dual until late in the game. The Bullfrogs took the lead and they did not look back as they shut out the Bucks 3-0.
The Bullfrogs looked to have a threat going in the bottom of the first inning. Brad Zapenas (Boston College) walked and Tom Barry (San Francisco) followed with a single to put two runners on. Scott Schebler (Wichita State) grounded into a fielder’s choice, forcing Barry out at second and putting runners on the corners. Troy Scott (Washington) struck out to end the threat and inning.
Green Bay had another rally going in the bottom of the second inning. Joe Betcher (Illinois-Chicago) walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. On a Jared Andreoli (Western Kentucky) ground out, Betcher moved to third. With two outs, Jeff Miera (Indiana State) walked to put runners on the corners. Collin Kuhn (Arkansas) lined out to shortstop to end the inning.
Waterloo had a scoring chance in the top of the third inning after Phil Keppler (Iowa) doubled to start the inning. After the next two batters were retired, Nick Anderson (DMACC) singled to center trying to score Keppler, but Keppler was thrown out at home by Kuhn.
The Frogs looked to have another scoring chance in the bottom of the third inning. After Zapenas reached base on an error by the shortstop, Barry singled to left to put two runners on. Schebler moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt. Troy Scott was hit by a pitch to load the bases for the Frogs with one out. Betcher grounded into an inning a double play to end the threat.
Green Bay had the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning but were unable to score after Kuhn popped out to shortstop to end the inning.
The Frogs finally broke onto the scoreboard in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Zapenas walked to start the inning, and advanced to second on a Barry groundout. Schebler walked to put two runners on base for Troy Scott. Scott singled up the middle to score Zapenas, putting the Frogs ahead 1-0.
Green Bay extended their lead in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Zapenas hit a double to left center that scored two for the Bullfrogs. This put the Frogs lead to 3-0.
Ben Versnik (UW-Whitewater) came out of the bullpen in relief in the top of the ninth inning, to slam the door on the Bucks. He retired the side in order to end the game.
Joel Delorit (UW-Stevens Point) picked up the win for the Frogs, tossing seven innings of six hit balls, while striking out nine batters. Versnik picked up the save, pitching a perfect ninth inning. Barry led the frogs at the plate going 3-5 on the evening.
The Bullfrogs and Bucks return to action tomorrow, July 13 at Joannes Stadium. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. It is Buck night at the ball park, where Miller Lite is only a dollar all night.
