Green Bay, Wis. – The Green Bay Bullfrogs (2-3, 20-19) were running out of time to come back from a 6-5 deficit to the Waterloo Bucks (2-3, 21-19). Tom Barry (San Francisco) had some heroics in his bat and the Bullfrogs came back to win 7-6.
The Bucks jumped out to an early lead. Waterloo jumped all over Bullfrogs starter Riley Tincher (UW-Whitewater) for two runs in the top of the first. Zach McCool (Iowa) singled to left and Tyler Robbins (Dallas Baptist) doubled to left. They were driven in by Ryan Rieger (Santa Clara) on a double to center. The Bucks took a 2-0 lead.
The Bullfrogs answered right back in the bottom of the first inning. After Barry struck out to lead off the game for the Frogs, Green Bay jumped all over the Bucks starter Mitch Mormann (LSU). Brad Zapenas (Boston College) singled and the next three batters walked, which scored Zapenas to put them down, 2-1. Troy Scott (Washington) scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 2-2. Scott Schebler (Wichita State) scored on a walk by Jared Andreoli, (Western Kentucky) putting the Frogs up 3-2. Green Bay added one more run on a Rob Coe double, (UW-Whitewater) putting them ahead 4-2.
Waterloo answered back in the top of the third. Landon Anderson (Dallas Baptist) singled, and McCool followed with a single to put two runners on. After Robbins grounded into a double play, the Bucks still had Anderson on third base with two outs. He scored on Rieger single down 4-3.
The Bucks took the lead in the top of the sixth inning with runners on second and third. The Bucks scored one run on a single to right field and plated another on an error by right fielder, Andreoli. This put the Bucks ahead 5-4. Waterloo added another run with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Phil Keppler, (Iowa) putting the Bucks ahead 6-4.
The score would stay this way until the bottom of the seventh inning. Tom Barry led off the inning by hitting a double off the left center field wall. He advanced to third on a Zapenas ground out. Barry scored on a Troy Scott ground out putting the Frogs down 6-5.
The Frogs took the lead back in the bottom of the eighth inning. Joe Betcher (Illinois-Chicago) singled to lead off the inning. Coe moved him to second with a sacrifice bunt. Barry came up and put the Frogs ahead by crushing a home run to left center field. The Frogs took a 7-6 lead.
The Bullfrogs would hold on for a win in the top of the ninth. Ben Versnik (UW-Whitewater) came in and walked the first batter he faced but retired the next three to secure the Bullfrogs 7-6 win.
Brian Burgess (West Alabama) picked up the win for the Frogs, pitching an inning in relief and allowing no runs or hits. He improves to 1-2 on the year. Versnik picked up his second consecutive save. Barry, Coe and Schebler lead the Bullfrogs at the plate with two hits apiece.
The Bullfrogs hit the road for one day road trip to Wisconsin Rapids to take on the Rafters on Wednesday, July 14. They return to Joannes Stadium for a doubleheader on July 15 with the Rafters.
