07/23/2010 10:16 PM - Green Bay, Wis.- The Green Bay Bullfrogs (5-6, 23-22) and the La Crosse Loggers (8-4, 25-21) split a doubleheader. The Bullfrogs offense clicked in game one and won 4-1, but the bats forgot to show up in game two. The Loggers won 2-0.
In game one, the Bullfrogs jumped all over the Loggers starter Kodey Simon (Winona State). In the bottom of the first inning, Troy Scott (Washington) came up to bat with two runners on base. Troy Scott drove the fifth pitch of the at-bat over the right field wall for a three-run homerun. This put the Bullfrogs up 3-0.
Green Bay added one more run in the bottom of the second inning. Ryan Kehl (St. Norbert) walked to put a runner on base. Then, he came around to score on a Tom Barry (San Francisco) single, putting the Frogs ahead 4-0.
The Loggers cut into the Bullfrogs lead in the top of the fifth inning. After Seth Mejias-Brean (Arizona) reached base on an error, he came around to score on a Trent Fuller (Sac City Community College) single making the Frogs lead three by a score of 4-1.
La Crosse had a threat going in the top of the seventh inning on reliever Ben Versnik (UW-Whitewater). Versnik allowed two batters to reach base with one out. The Loggers sacrificed the runners over to second and third with two outs. Versnik struck out Chris O'Dowd (Dartmouth) to end the game and pick up the save.
Owen Jones picked up the win in game one. He tossed six innings, allowing one unearned run on four hits. He is now 4-3 on the year. Versnik picked up his fourth save of the season. Troy Scott led the Frogs at the plate going 1-2 with three RBI.
The Loggers jumped on the Bullfrogs starter, Mike Thomas (Rider). In the top of the first inning, Tony Mueller (Winonia State) singled to reach base. He came around to score on a Mike Marjama (Sac City CC) ground out, putting the Loggers up 1-0.
La Crosse added one run in the top of the third inning. Mueller laid down a bunt and third baseman, Joe Betcher (Illinois-Chicago) threw the ball away and Mueller advanced to third. He scored when Collin Kuhn (Arkansas) threw the ball away, putting the Loggers up 2-0.
That would be enough as the Loggers starting pitcher, Dan Langfield (Memphis) would pitch all seven innings while only allowing one Bullfrogs hit. The hit came in the seventh inning when Brad Zapensas (Boston College) led off the inning with a single, but would not even threaten to score.
Thomas picked up the loss for the Bullfrogs, going three innings, allowing two runs on two hits.
The Bullfrogs hit the road for a two game set with the Battle Creek Bombers on Saturday and Sunday. Green Bay returns to Joannes Stadium on Monday, July 26 to take on the Eau Claire Express. First pitch on Monday is scheduled for 7:05 P.M. |
