Battle Creek, Mich. – The Green Bay Bullfrogs (7-6, 25-22) rode the strong pitching performance from Tim Shibuya (UC-San Diego) to a 5-2 victory over the Battle Creek Bombers (1-11, 15-31) on Sunday afternoon.
The Bullfrogs jumped ahead of the Bombers early in the game. In the top of the second inning, the Bullfrogs had the bases loaded with one out for Mike Furlong (Central College). Furlong walked, plating Joel Hutter (Dallas Baptist) and putting the Bullfrogs ahead 1-0.
Green Bay added to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. With Brad Zapenas (Boston College) on first base, Scott Schebler (Wichita State) hit a triple, scoring Zapenas. This put the Frogs ahead 2-0.
The Bullfrogs extended their lead in the top of the sixth inning. Dan Putnam (UW-Whitewater) walked and advanced to third on a Furlong single. Collin Kuhn (Arkansas) singled to score Putnam, putting the Bullfrogs ahead 3-0.
Green Bay will broaden their lead to 5-0 in the top of the seventh inning. After the first two batters were retired, the Bullfrogs started a rally. Hutter walked, followed by a Putnam single and Ryan Kehl (St. Norbert) walk, to load the bases. Joe Betcher (Illinois-Chicago) drew a bases loaded RBI walk, putting Green Bay ahead 4-0. Kuhn followed with a walk of his own with a bases loaded RBI walk. This extended the lead to 5-0.
The Bombers cut into the Frogs lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. With the help of Bullfrogs errors and timely hitting by the Bombers, they added two unearned runs. This cut the Bullfrogs lead to 5-2.
