Green Bay, Wis. – The Green Bay Bullfrogs (8-8, 26-24) found themselves down late in a game against the Madison Mallards (11-7, 28-23). The Bullfrogs had some late inning heroics to beat the Mallards, 6-4.
Green Bay found themselves scoring first in the bottom of the second inning. With two outs and Jared Andreoli (Western Kentucky) on first base, he was driven home by Jeff Miera’s (Indiana State) double to left center. With Miera on second, Dan Putnam (UW-Whitewater) singled, moving Miera to third. Brad Zapenas (Boston College) singled, driving home Miera, putting the Frogs up 2-0. Troy Scott (Washington) singled to plate Putnam, extending the lead to 3-0.
The Mallards answered back in the top of the third inning. With two outs and a runner on first, Harold Riggins (NC State) struck out but reached base on a wild pitch by Brad Schreiber (Purdue). Rafael Lopez (Florida State) doubled to right field, putting the Mallards down 3-2.
Madison took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. With Adam Davis (Illinois) on third base, Jacob Esch (Georgia Tech) came up to bat. Esch grounded out to second base, scoring Davis and tying the game at 3-3. Kyle Gaedele (Valparaiso) doubled and scored on a passed ball putting the Mallards ahead 4-3.
The score would stay at 4-3 until the bottom of the seventh inning, when the Bullfrogs would tie the game. Miera led off the inning and reached base after Riggins dropped a foul ball. Miera advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on an error by the Mallards catcher. Zapenas drove him home on a sacrifice fly, tying the game at 4-4.
The Bullfrogs broke the tie in the bottom of the eighth inning. Scott Schebler (Wichita State) walked to start the inning and scored on a Tom Barry (San Francisco) double, putting the Frogs ahead 5-4. With the infield playing in, Andreoli laced a singled by the shortstop, scoring Barry and extending the Frogs lead to 6-4.
Alex Schmarzo (St. Mary’s) came in to pitch the top of the ninth and retired the first two batters he faced before running into a little trouble. He walked Gaedele and Reed Gragnani (Virginia) reached on an error by Miera. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Josh Parr (Illinois) popped out to second to end the inning, with the Frogs winning 6-4.
